Buyer Checklist

Getting a new puppy or dog is an exciting and rewarding experience, but it's important to make sure you're fully prepared and informed before bringing your new companion home.

This checklist is designed to help buyers on Lancaster Puppies make responsible decisions and ensure the puppy they choose comes from a safe, healthy, and ethical environment.

Buyer Checklist

1. Do Your Research First

  • Assess Your Readiness: Make sure you have the time, finances, and commitment to care for a dog. Puppies require attention, training, and long-term care.

  • Research Breeds: Understand the temperament, exercise, grooming needs, and potential health concerns of the breed you're interested in.

  • Check Local Laws: Some areas may have specific rules about breed restrictions, licensing, or pet limits. Always check with your local authorities before bringing a dog home.

Confirm That the Seller Is Genuine

  • Always arrange to visit the puppy at the seller’s home or request a live video call if you’re far away.

  • Be cautious if a seller asks for money upfront, refuses a visit, or suggests meeting in a neutral location instead of their home.

  • Do not pay using untraceable methods like Friends & Family transfers, gift cards, or cryptocurrency.

  • If something feels off, please report it to us so we can investigate.

Is the Puppy Over 8 Weeks of Age?

  • Puppies must be at least 8 weeks old and fully weaned before being removed from their mom and going to a new home.

  • You should always be able to see the puppies with their mother.

  • If you're unsure, ask for proof of birthdate or veterinary documentation.

Is the Puppy Vaccinated?
While not legally mandated, the following vaccines are considered essential for all dogs by veterinary organizations:

  • DHPP/DAPP: A combination vaccine protecting against Distemper, Adenovirus (Hepatitis), Parvovirus, and sometimes Parainfluenza.

  • Vaccination Schedule:

    • 6–8 weeks: First dose

    • 10–12 weeks: Second dose

    • 14–16 weeks: Third dose

    • 12 months: Booster

    • Every 1–3 years: Subsequent boosters, depending on the vaccine and local guidelines

  • Ask the seller for vet records or vaccination certificates. If not vaccinated, this will become your responsibility immediately and you should be prepared for this.

Has the Puppy Been Dewormed?

  • Puppies should begin deworming at 2 weeks of age, repeated every 2 weeks until 8 weeks old, then monthly until 6 months of age.

  • Ask what parasites the puppy has been treated for and request proof of deworming.

Questions to Ask the Seller

  • Can I see where the puppy was raised?

  • What vet care has the puppy received?

  • Can I meet the mother (or both parents)?

  • What is the puppy eating currently?

  • Has the puppy been socialized or trained at all?

  • Do you offer a health guarantee or contract?

Red Flags to Watch Out For

  • Seller avoids questions or gives inconsistent answers.

  • Puppies appear dirty, sickly, or fearful.

  • Seller refuses to share ID or address.

  • The listing shows reused or overly generic photos.

  • Seller pressures you to send money quickly.

If you spot any of these signs or have any suspicions, please reach out to us so we can assist in looking into the seller further and take action as needed.

What a Good Environment Should Look Like

  • Clean, dry sleeping area with soft bedding

  • Access to fresh water and clean bowls

  • Space to play and interact

  • Safe, hazard-free indoor or outdoor areas

  • Puppies appear healthy, alert, and socialized

Final Steps Before Bringing a Puppy Home

  • Schedule a vet check within a few days of arrival.

  • Puppy-proof your home and stock up on supplies.

  • Begin socialization and basic training early.

  • Get ready for all of the puppy snuggles and cuddles!
