At Lancaster Puppies, we’re committed to promoting responsible pet ownership and ensuring the well-being of all animals. We work hard to create a safe and trustworthy space for buyers and sellers to connect.
While we don’t take part in the actual sale or transfer of puppies, we do take all reports seriously and aim to support our users however we can. Although we aren’t legally able to intervene directly in transaction disputes, we’re here to guide you through the process and help point you in the right direction.
Here are some steps and resources we recommend:
1. Understand Your Rights and Responsibilities
Research Applicable Laws: Familiarize yourself with federal and state regulations regarding the sale and purchase of pets. For instance, the Animal Welfare Act (AWA) sets minimum standards of care for animals bred for commercial sale. Additionally, as of 2023, 22 states have enacted Pet Purchaser Protection Acts, commonly known as "Puppy Lemon Laws," which provide remedies if a purchased pet is found to have a disease or defect.
Recognize Seller Obligations: Some states require sellers to disclose specific information about the animal's health, vaccinations, and lineage. Ensure you receive and review all necessary documentation before finalizing a purchase.
2. Take Steps to Protect Yourself
Request Detailed Information: Ask the seller for comprehensive details about the puppy, including health records, vaccination history, and any known medical conditions.
Obtain a Written Agreement: Secure a contract outlining the terms of the sale, health guarantees, and any return policies.
3. Addressing Concerns Post-Purchase
Document Issues Thoroughly: Keep detailed records of any health problems, communications with the seller, and veterinary reports.
Review State Remedies: If your state has a Pet Purchaser Protection Act, familiarize yourself with the remedies available, which may include returning the animal for a refund or receiving reimbursement for veterinary expenses.
Seek Legal Advice if Necessary: Consult with your local law enforcement or an attorney experienced in animal law to explore your options and ensure your rights are protected.
4. Reporting Misconduct
Provide Evidence: If you suspect a seller of unethical practices or non-compliance with animal welfare standards, gather substantial evidence such as communications, contracts, and veterinary reports.
Contact Appropriate Authorities: Report your concerns to local animal control agencies, the state's attorney general's office, or organizations that oversee animal welfare.
Inform Lancaster Puppies: Share your concerns and evidence with us. While we cannot mediate disputes, we take such reports seriously and will investigate. If we find evidence of wrongdoing, we can take actions including removing and banning the seller from our platform.
